  7. A silver shaft appeared at the Temple
  8.   shining among the gold.
  9. Did it appear overnight like a Spring mushroom,
  10.   or was it there much longer - hiding?
  11. Anomaly, or portent?  I wonder...
  12.  
  13. I prayed for a sign that I might know:
  14.   Does this foreshadow the end of the present,
  15.     or perhaps the beginning of the next?
  16. Silence.
  17. I searched the temple carefully.  More silver
  18.   where once only golden gleamed.
  19.  
  20. Silver on the crown and the crest, too.
  21. And the golden shafts are thinner now -
  22.   worn away in friction with time.
  23. When did I stop growing up
  24.   and start growing old?
